Driscoll, Flipped Learning & Democratic Education (master's thesis: student and educator perceptions of flipped learning)
"Leveraging modern technologies to improve education is an age-old practice. Translating the use of these new technologies into improved student outcomes, however, often proves elusive. It is therefore important to have a vision of what educational practice should look like and what goals should be established regarding student learning. This brief study assumes that one such vision is to provide students with an effective democratic education, one that develops knowledgeable citizens that can skillfully and critically engage in the democratic process. The Partnership for 21st (2012) outlines a similar vision with its focus upon the development of what they term 'civic literacy.' The other assumption is that new technologies and practices, such as those employed in what many term 'flipped classrooms,' can help foster such learning environments and educational outcomes." Preliminary study comparing MS students' use of teacher-created vs. Khan Academy videos at home "The goal of the study was to test whether students would do better watching a video that their teacher created (Katie) versus an outsourced video (Khan Academy). Seventeen students were randomly selected to participate; all were students from Katie's Algebra 1 class. They all were familiar with watch lecture videos. Students were asked to view a video on Quadratic Functions; none of the students had been exposed to the topic prior to the study. All students watched the video during class and were then asked to complete a short quiz that Katie created. The quiz included five questions, with a total of 25 possible points." Johnson & Renner dissertation - HS students' and teachers' perceptions & questions; student achievement "The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of traditional and flipped course delivery methods using a mixed-methods switching replications design. To examine the benefits, shortcomings, perceptions, and academic results of the flipped classroom model while using technology as a supporting tool, a traditional high school computer applications course was “flipped” so that direct instruction occurred prior to class time. Classroom instruction is the independent variable with two levels, traditional and flipped. Student academic achievement is a dependent variable, which in theory will show greater gains by students when participating in the more effective of the two classroom models. The cognitive level of questions asked by students and teachers during class serves as a dependent variable that will gauge the level of student cognition based on the levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy. Perceptions of course format serve as a dependent variable that will provide insight into teacher and student preferences of learning method." "The study’s executive summary highlighted the most salient result: 'No significant difference was found between pre- and post-test scores of students who did and did not participate in the flipped classroom approach,' wrote Drs. Renner and Johnson. 'It is the opinion of the co-investigators that this is not a result of the flipped method of instruction, but rather a failed attempt at the flipped method of instruction.' Dr. Renner emphasized that he supports the flipped instructional model and that, as a result of his research, he was able to formulate guidelines for a more successful 'flipped' experience." Snowden Teacher Perceptions Of Flipping Master's Thesis "Advancements in media technologies have resulted in increased student usage causing teachers to struggle to be able to engage and hold student’s interest in a typical classroom. As students’ needs change, the field of education changes. One strategy that is gaining in popularity among teachers is the implementation of the 'flipped classroom' also known as the 'inverted classroom' or 'reverse instruction' - a method incorporates technology to 'flip' or 'reverse' what is typically done in class with what is typically done as homework. Through teacher interviews of eight core teachers, this study attempts to discover teacher perceptions of the use of this method. Results of the study reveal that perceptions of the method are more positive among teachers who typically use lecture as a primary mode of information dissemination."

Flip with Dr. Lodge McCammon
“Flipping the classroom: minimize time spent on lecture delivery and maximize time spent on challenging students to be active in their learning. This method is focused on using 1-take video to flip the efficiency of the classroom by creating a self-paced learning environment. Flipping the classroom can be highly effective even if students do not have access to devices outside of school. Having students watch videos for homework is the last thing we should be thinking about when starting a flipped classroom.” My Flipped Classroom Experiment
Created as part of the Adobe Generation Professional: Video course, about one teachers’ experience with flipping his classroom. In his video, Mark Janke explains why he does it, how he does it, and shares the results. It’s a “flipped report on flipped learning.” And after 2 years the experiment is working – watch and see how. Videos by Keith Hughes This is an amazing collection of videos made by an inner-city history teacher named Keith Hughes, aka "HipHughes." These videos seem to support the more traditional model of FILT, and they are definitely worth a look. His channel is: http://www.youtube.com/user/hughesDV and a sample video is below. Also, Hughes has made an interesting "how to video" about flipping classrooms -- mostly technological suggestions. Flipped Classroom Introduction
This is an interesting video posted by a physical education teacher in New Zealand that is meant to serve as an introduction to his flipped classroom for his students and their parents. There are some interesting details included about how he flips (e.g., specific instructions for his students about how to watch videos at home and prepare for in-class discussion about them, using a 'WSQ' method), and also comparative data on what appears to be a national PE assessment standard from the three previous school years, during the last two of which he flipped his class. "Katie Gimbar didn’t know much about 'flipped classrooms' in the fall of 2010, but she knew she needed help in her eighth-grade classroom at Durant Road Middle school. That was the year 12 new students were placed in her Algebra I class at the end of the first semester. These would be 12 students who had never been in Algebra I before – and they were instantly behind. This was not the kind of algebraic inequality Gimbar was used to solving. She decided it was time to take a closer look at flipping the classroom." Also see her Algebra flipped classroom (video) FAQ. Flipping the Classroom (tutorial video)

Should You Flip Your Classroom? (Ramsey Musallam) "At its core, 'flipped instruction' refers to moving aspects of teaching out of the classroom and into the homework space. With the advent of new technologies, specifically the ability to record digitally annotated and narrated screencasts, instructional videos have become a common medium in the flipped classroom. Although not limited to videos, a flipped classroom most often harnesses different forms of instructional video published online for students." Flipping the Elementary Classroom (Bergmann) "A question I have been frequently asked is how do you flip an elementary classroom? Does the flipped methodology work for the younger grades? The answer is yes–sorta. My current role is that of a K-8 technology facilitator. I work directly with an amazing staff who has taught me much about students in the younger grades. Here is my advice for elementary teachers." The Best Thing You Can Do Now to Prepare Next Years' Students for the Flipped Classroom! (Bergmann) "One of the most important things to do as you flip a class is to get student buy-in. Students need to see how the flipped classroom benefits them. They also need to know how to operate in a flipped classroom. So how can you do that? Get a video camera or use your smartphone, and ask your current students a couple of questions."
